In this module we explored the use of pesticides in organic and conventional farming. We considered the role of pesticides and the difference between natural and synthetic (man-made) pesticides. The techniques used to control pests revealed that organic and conventional farmers are both encouraged to use best management practices that maintain soil health and limit pesticide use. In this module, we explored common perceptions about organic and conventional foods. From this discussion you may have realized that there is not a clear ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ way to grow food that can be used on every farm. The sustainability of a farm system seems to depend heavily on the farm managerial quality. Sustainable agriculture is not exclusive to organic or conventional agriculture.
